Nurse Practitioner Week

Nurse Practitioner Week runs from 9 to 15 December and celebrates an important milestone for the nursing profession, with Thursday 12 December marking the anniversary of the first Nurse Practitioner introduced in Australia in 1999.

The week aims to promote the Nurse Practitioner profession and recognise their efforts. The theme for this year is “much more than you know” #NPMUCHMORE which emphasises that nurse practitioners do much more than the public realises.

Nurse Practitioners work autonomously and collaboratively in advanced and extended clinical roles to complement other healthcare providers. Expert clinical decision-making ability sits at the core of the role, as nurse practitioners are authorised to undertake activities that may include prescribing medication, ordering and interpreting diagnostics and pathology, and direct referral to other health care professionals.

There are 1,800 Nurse Practitioners across the country, and we have 17 (15 Nurse Practitioners and 2 Candidates) at Monash Health. They work across a range of areas including: Chronic Disease, Diabetes, Emergency, Mental Health /Eating Disorders, Mental Health / Physical Disorders, Nephrology, Oncology, Paediatric Oncology and Supportive Care and Stroke.

Over the week we will introduce you to two of our Nurse Practitioners on iNews.
