12 May Meet Nerine Wilson
To celebrate International Day of the Nurse we sat down with the Nurse Unit Manager of Ward 44 at Monash Medical Centre, Nerine Wilson.
1. What does being a nurse at Monash Health mean to you?
Nursing is a rewarding profession and being a nurse in the role of Nurse Manger (NM) at MH means upholding the ICARE values and being able to make a difference to the lives of the patients and ensuring they get the best care possible at all times as we strive in our relentless pursuit for excellence.
2. Tell us about your journey to Monash Health and this role?
I completed my Grad year at MMC and then went on to work on 32 North until 2001 before going overseas to work. I returned to MMC in 2004 as an ANM in Outpatients, then in 2006 was appointed NM of the Medihotel and then later, NM of both the Medihotel and the Infusion Centre. When the Medihotel closed, I was NM for 32 West and then 32 North, before commencing in my current role of NM of Ward 44.
3. Favourite part of being a nurse?
My favourite part of being a Nurse in the NM role is to be able to have input into directing the nursing care of patients, getting to know the patients and their families and be an advocate for the patients.
4. What interests and hobbies do you have outside of work?
My husband Mark and I have two boys Harvey 8 and Joel 7 and they keep us busy with a lot of sports. I enjoy catching up with family and friends and shopping.
5. Most rewarding thing about being a nurse
I always wanted to be a nurse and I’ve loved and am extremely grateful for the opportunities the profession has brought my way – working overseas was a highlight and I am proud to have dedicated my career in Melbourne to work for Monash Health.
6. If you weren’t working in your current role, what would you be doing?
If I wasn’t working in my current role, I would still be involved in the nursing profession…but….I can’t imagine not working for MH and not being in a management role.
7. Most people don’t know this about me but……
We have a relatively new four legged addition to our family – a 4 month old Toy Cavoodle Puppy whose name is Raven. He is just gorgeous.
