06 Mar Meet Neliya from Ward 44 MMC Clayton
Neliya Wijeysooria started at Monash Health back in 2015 as a Patient Services Assistant (PSA) after spending most of her career in the hotel industry. She has become well known at Monash Medical Centre for her attention to detail and passion for getting the job done to the highest standard. “She is a star, Neliya takes a great deal of pride and leads the cleaning standards on the ward” said Leanne Ross, Support Services Manager MMC & MCH
“Neliya, you lead an incredible team and have set the standard that we aspire to across MMC and we just wanted to acknowledge and thank you and the team for the exemplary work you do every day to maintain the ward at consistently such a high standard,” said Marg Harley, DCO Speciality Medicine MMC.
To celebrate Hospitality in HealthCare Day, a day dedicated to recognising the contribution our Support Service team members make across Monash Health every day, we spent some time chatting to Neliya.
What does a normal day look like for you?
I’m here Monday – Friday, my day is varied but my priority is always to continue to keep the ward clean to the highest standard ensuring we can get 100/100 on the audits. I work alongside the nurses, doctors, food services and patients to ensure every area of the ward is clean from the patient bathrooms and beds to the reception keyboard and staff tearoom. We hold meetings so we can make sure that everything is communicated and things can be done in a timely manner.
I also like to make sure all our patients are comfortable and looked after, I see them as a guest not a patient. Sometimes I give them the weather reports, or pretend it’s a hotel and I’m room service.
What is your favourite thing about your role at Monash Health?
I work on a fantastic ward. Nerine the Nurse Unit Manager of my ward is excellent and has created a great culture that means I come to work excited and happy every day. The wider team is tremendous and we are like a family, some of my colleagues even call me mumma.
What would you like to say to your colleagues today?
Thank you to everyone that comes onto Ward 44 and makes it such a great environment. Thank you for also being so cooperative and understanding of my role and the values and pride we have.
We encourage you to take some time out of your day today to thank our wonderful Support Service team members like Neliya.
