22 Jul Developing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
Since the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), there have been significant changes in the way that patients with complex disabilities are discharged from Monash Health. Allied Health have a key role in working with NDIS participants and have been leading the way in developing processes, resources and building capacity within the adult bed based setting.
Whitney Lipman was appointed to a short term allied health NDIS project officer position (March – June 2019). This position was developed to address the key strategic priorities identified through the NDIS Strategic Patient Flow Workshop. Supported by the General Manager of Allied Health and Patient Flow, Stuart Cavill and other members of the NDIS allied health reference group (Jacinta Re, Sarah Brown, Jane Carlin, Mary-Lou Devlin, Deanne Davis and Jaye Toulson), Whitney, Deanne and Mary-Lou have achieved a huge amount in a short time. The key achievements are as follows:
- Development of key Monash Health NDIS resources for Monash patients, Bed-based teams and Emergency Department care co-ordinators.
- Development of a new NDIS bed based procedure. This is currently in consultation phase and hopefully be approved by August 2019.
- Establishing pathways for NDIS patients within Monash Health to assist with patient flow, workflow documentation and bed-based escalation flow chart.
- Education: Facilitated an education partnership between Summer Foundation and Monash health. Two, one day workshops were delivered using a train the trainer model to our newly identified NDIS champions, who will continue to upskill their teams and disciplines with support from the NDIS discipline leads (Mary-Lou Devlin – SW, Deanne Davis – OT).
We encourage all staff to access the NDIS intranet site for the new resources and more information about the NDIS. Whilst these resources have been created for bed based services, we would like to continue to foster the sharing of NDIS information, knowledge and practice throughout Monash Health.
