A new HDU for Monash Medical Centre P-Block

Consumers and employees will soon begin to make use of the new High Dependency Unit (HDU) at Monash Medical Centre’s acute psychiatric inpatient unit.

The new space was officially opened today by Prof Suresh Sundram, Unit Head for Adult Psychiatry at Monash Health. P-Block staff, executive team members, and the project team gathered this morning to tour the new facility, which has a focus on natural light and open space.

It also features three specially-designed single bedrooms, and separate bathrooms. An outdoor courtyard, kitchen space, and family/carer visitation room complete the redevelopment.

Chief Operating Officer Martin Keogh said the new space would provide a calmer environment for consumers, many of whom have complex metal health issues.

“It’s exciting to see the new space. It represents our commitment towards providing care with a focus on access, independence, and wellbeing,” Mr Keogh said.

General Manager of Mental Health Paula Hakesley said that the new HDU was designed to be as close as possible to a home-like environment.

“We undertook extensive design planning, and we took consumer and family/carer feedback on board,” Ms Hakesley said. “Initiatives such as the family/carer and interview room and separate bathrooms will help consumers retain their dignity during their time in the HDU.”

For Nurse Unit Manager Amanda Haslam, the new HDU represents a significant upgrade from the previous space.

“P-Block staff work in a challenging environment. We’re absolutely dedicated to providing the best possible care for our consumers, but the previous space was very dated and claustrophobic at times,” Ms Haslam said. “It is now much more open and has the features and flexibility we require. I’m very pleased that our team will now have the facility to match our commitment to consumers.”
