20th Victorian Collaborative Mental Health Nursing Conference

On Thursday 15 and Friday 16 August, we celebrated the 20th Victorian Collaborative Mental Health Nursing Conference. This conference celebrates and showcases the specialist practice of Mental Health Nursing, and the ways in which we can contribute to better health outcomes and experiences for consumers and their carers.
This year we are proud to have had abstracts accepted.
Clinical Nurse Consultant Nicky Slocombe and Clinical Nurse Specialist Sindu Marottickal presented a Unit 3 Project: ‘Seeds of Hope’
Seeds of hope is a project initiated on the aged persons’ mental health acute inpatient unit based at Dandenong hospital. It sits well within the domains of recovery oriented practice by promoting a culture of hope, autonomy, collaboration and community participation. It also benefits in strengthening therapeutic relationships between consumers and staff.
Staff introduce the seeds of hope initiative, by first talking to Consumers about the program. Consumers choose a pot and how they would like to decorate it. They then choose seeds to grow. The consumers are encouraged to nurture and grow the seed to a plant with the support of staff. Consumers are able to take their plant home with them when discharged.
Clinical Nurse Educator Ivana Vargovic presented: ‘The awakening of students on placement’
This presentation highlighted the process of the redevelopment, implementation and evaluation of the Nurse Educator Face to face sessions with nursing students, when undertaking their mental health clinical placements. The interactive orientation was redesigned to provide more practice and reassurance, with the aim of commencing placement with less uncertainty and anxiety. Friday’s face to face sessions have been transformed to facilitate reflection, emphasizing the importance of positive thinking and self-care.
The conference was a great opportunity for the Mental Health Nurses and seven graduate nurses who attended to represent Monash Health. It was a celebratory two days showcasing the past 20 years of the Collaborative Mental Health Nursing Conference and the transformation in Mental Health Nursing practice and care. Whilst also inspiring and energizing Mental Health Nurses on an exciting journey for the years ahead.
